Area rug cleaning

Some rugs are best cleaned where they lie. Others need to come with us. Here is how we decide, and what happens either way.

On-site or pickup?

A rug that can be cleaned well in your living room should be. A rug that cannot is better off at our shop, and we will say so rather than do a shallow job on your floor.

Cleaned at your home

Best for
Synthetic rugs in reasonable condition, low pile, nothing precious
What we do
We clean it where it lies, on a protective sheet, and extract as much moisture as we can before we leave.
How long
About 30–60 minutes
Drying
Several hours, in place

Picked up and cleaned at our shop

Best for
Wool, cotton, handmade or antique rugs, heavy pet contamination, deep-set soil
What we do
We collect it, dust the dry soil out, wash and rinse it properly, then dry it flat under controlled conditions and bring it back.
How long
About 5–10 days
Drying
Dry when it comes back to you

Rugs we take, and rugs we turn down

Turning a rug down is not us being difficult. Some fibres change permanently when they get wet, and no price is worth ruining something you cannot replace.

We clean these

  • Synthetic rugs — nylon, polypropylene, polyester
  • Wool rugs, machine-made and hand-knotted
  • Cotton flatweaves and dhurries
  • Most hand-knotted orientals, after an inspection
  • Rugs with pet accidents — tell us up front so we plan for it

We may decline these, or refer you on

  • Rugs where the dyes bleed on testing and cannot be stabilised
  • Silk, viscose, rayon, and "art silk" rugs — these often change texture permanently when wet
  • Rugs with rotten or brittle foundations that will not survive handling
  • Rugs with structural damage that needs a restorer rather than a cleaner

How pickup works

Turnaround is about 5–10 days. Handing over something valuable should come with a paper trail, so it does.

  1. 1

We inspect it at your door

Fibre, dyes, construction, and condition, before it goes anywhere. This is where we spot the pre-existing wear, so nobody is surprised later.

  2. 2

    Photos and a receipt

We photograph the rug from both sides and give you a written receipt describing its condition, so the record exists before it leaves your house.

  3. 3

    Dusting first

Most of what is in a rug is dry soil sitting deep in the pile. It comes out dry, before any water, and it is the step that separates a proper rug clean from a surface wash.

  4. 4

    Wash, rinse, dry flat

Cleaned with the method the fibre can take, rinsed thoroughly, then dried flat with controlled air so the foundation does not distort.

  5. 5

    Back to you

We deliver it, wrapped, and you compare it against the photos we took at pickup.

Rug questions

Do you pick rugs up?

Yes, for rugs that need a deeper clean than we can do in a living room. Turnaround is about 5–10 days. We photograph the rug and give you a receipt describing its condition when we collect it.

Can you clean wool or silk rugs?

Wool, yes, normally at our shop where we can control the wash and the drying. Silk, viscose, and rayon are far more delicate and we assess those case by case. Some we will decline rather than risk.

Why do rugs need a quote instead of a fixed price?

Because the price depends on size, fibre, construction, and condition, and two rugs of the same size can need completely different work.

Tell us about your rug

Send the size, the material if you know it, and four photos. We will come back with a price and tell you honestly whether it is an on-site job or one for the shop.
